Denton County Addiction Resources: A Local Guide to Getting Help

Medically reviewed by Kevin Wandler, MD, Chief Medical Advisor

Denton County is home to Promises Dallas-Fort Worth, but our Lewisville campus is only one piece of a much larger network of help. Whether you live in Denton, Lewisville, Flower Mound, Little Elm or one of the growing towns in between, there are public, private and peer-based resources for substance use and mental health concerns.

Below is a plain-language overview of where to turn, what each type of resource does well and how to combine them into a plan that works for you or someone you care about.

Know Your Crisis Options First

Before you research anything else, save these in your phone. For a medical emergency, including a suspected overdose, a seizure, chest pain or someone who cannot be woken up, call 911. For thoughts of suicide, overwhelming distress or any mental health crisis, call or text 988. The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline connects you with a trained counselor at no cost, any time of day or night.

It also helps to keep naloxone at home if anyone in your household uses opioids or could come across counterfeit pills. Naloxone nasal spray is sold over the counter at many pharmacies, and it can reverse an opioid overdose while you wait for emergency responders.

Denton County MHMR and State-Funded Care

Denton County MHMR is the county’s local mental health authority. In Texas, local authorities act as a front door to publicly funded behavioral health services. Depending on the program, that can include assessment, counseling, psychiatric care, crisis services and referrals to other community resources. These services are especially important for residents who do not have private insurance.

Because programs and eligibility rules shift over time, reach out to Denton County MHMR through its official channels to ask what is currently offered. Texas Health and Human Services oversees the state’s behavioral health system and publishes information on substance use services, mental health services and how local authorities fit together.

Free Referral Services That Work Anywhere

If you are not sure what kind of care you need, a referral line can narrow the field quickly. SAMHSA’s National Helpline is free and confidential, answers every day of the year and can suggest treatment programs, support groups and community services based on your location and circumstances. Help is available in English and Spanish.

Your health plan is another resource people often overlook. The member services number on your insurance card can explain your behavioral health benefits and tell you which providers are in network. You can also ask a treatment center to check your benefits on your behalf, which takes some of the paperwork off your plate.

Peer Support and Family Groups

Community support groups meet throughout Denton County and online. Consider these widely available options:

  • AA and NA: Twelve-step fellowships for people who want to stop drinking or using drugs, with meetings across North Texas and online.
  • SMART Recovery: A secular, skills-based program that focuses on building motivation, coping with urges, managing thoughts and feelings and living a balanced life.
  • Al-Anon: Meetings for relatives and friends of people who drink, centered on their own well-being rather than on changing the drinker.
  • NAMI: Classes and support groups for people with mental health conditions and the families who love them.

Use each organization’s official meeting finder for current times and formats, since schedules change often.

Special Considerations for Denton County Residents

Denton County blends college neighborhoods, historic small towns, lakeside communities and busy commuter suburbs along I-35E. That variety means people run into different barriers. College students may worry about falling behind in class. Parents with long commutes may struggle to fit appointments into the week. People in quieter, more rural parts of the county may have fewer options close by.

Telehealth can close some of those gaps. A virtual intensive outpatient program lets adults attend structured treatment several days a week from home, which can make recovery more realistic for people with demanding schedules or no easy way to travel.

Care Close to Home at Promises DFW

Because our campus sits in Lewisville, many Denton County residents can reach us with a short drive. Promises DFW is accredited by The Joint Commission and provides medical detox, residential addiction treatment, residential mental health treatment and an in-person partial hospitalization program, along with the virtual IOP described above. Care includes individual, group and family therapy, evidence-based approaches such as CBT and DBT, and aftercare planning for every client.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Denton County MHMR do?

It is the local mental health authority for Denton County, which means it helps deliver publicly funded mental health services and can connect residents with other community resources. Contact it directly for current programs and eligibility.

Is it safe to quit drinking on my own?

Not always. Alcohol withdrawal can be life-threatening for people who drink heavily or have been drinking for a long time. Talk with a doctor or a medical detox program before you stop.

Can I go to treatment at Promises DFW and keep attending meetings?

Yes. Many people use peer support groups alongside professional treatment, and meetings can be part of the aftercare plan you build before you leave.

A clinical assessment looks at your substance use, physical health, mental health and home life to recommend a starting point. Our admissions team can walk you through that process.
