Golden Rule Insurance Company is part of the UnitedHealthcare family and sells coverage to individuals and families rather than through employers. If you bought a plan on your own, perhaps between jobs or while self-employed, there’s a chance it was issued by Golden Rule.
Promises Dallas-Fort Worth is in network with UnitedHealthcare, and Golden Rule is included in that contract. With Golden Rule, though, the type of policy you hold may matter even more than the network, because some individual products are designed very differently from traditional health insurance.
How Golden Rule Relates to Our In-Network Contract
Our agreement with UnitedHealthcare lists Golden Rule among the UnitedHealthcare-affiliated plans it includes. For Golden Rule members, that generally means in-network rates may apply at our Lewisville facility when the policy includes behavioral health benefits. Whether your specific policy includes those benefits is the key question.
Why Your Plan Type Matters
Golden Rule has offered several kinds of individual coverage. Before counting on any benefit for rehab, find out which kind you have:
- Comprehensive individual health plans that follow Affordable Care Act rules must include mental health and substance use disorder services as essential health benefits.
- Short-term medical plans are temporary policies that don’t have to follow all Affordable Care Act rules. They may exclude pre-existing conditions or limit or exclude mental health and substance use treatment.
- Fixed indemnity or supplemental plans pay set cash amounts for certain events and aren’t designed to work like full health insurance for a treatment stay.
Your policy documents, often called the certificate or policy booklet, state which type you have. If the words “short-term” appear, read the exclusions section closely or ask us to review your benefits with you.
What a Golden Rule Plan May Cover
When your policy includes behavioral health benefits, coverage still depends on medical necessity and prior authorization. It may include:
- Medical detox to manage withdrawal safely under medical supervision
- Residential treatment for substance use, mental health or co-occurring conditions
- Partial hospitalization (PHP) in person at our Lewisville campus
- A virtual intensive outpatient program (IOP) for adults anywhere in Texas
How to Verify Your Golden Rule Benefits
Call the customer service number on your card and ask directly whether your policy covers substance use and mental health treatment, whether Promises Dallas-Fort Worth is in network, and whether prior authorization is needed. If you have a short-term plan, also ask about pre-existing condition limits and any waiting periods. Keep notes, including the date and a call reference number.
If you’d rather not make the call yourself, our admissions team offers free, confidential insurance verification and will explain what we find. Individual plans can be harder to interpret than employer coverage, so a second set of eyes can help.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Golden Rule the same as UnitedHealthcare?
Golden Rule is a UnitedHealthcare company, and it’s included in our UnitedHealthcare in-network contract. Your benefits still come from your specific Golden Rule policy.
My short-term plan excludes rehab. What are my options?
You may qualify for a Marketplace plan during a special enrollment period after certain life events, or you may have access to other coverage. Our page on paying for treatment without insurance explains other paths as well.
Does Golden Rule cover detox?
Comprehensive plans often include detox when it’s medically necessary. Withdrawal from alcohol or benzodiazepines can be life-threatening, so don’t stop suddenly on your own while you sort out coverage.
Does a Golden Rule plan cover mental health treatment?
ACA-compliant individual plans include mental health benefits, which can apply to residential mental health care, PHP or virtual IOP when medically necessary. Short-term and supplemental products may not, so check your policy type first.
