If your insurance card lists Optum, or you call about mental health or substance use benefits and reach an Optum representative, your behavioral health coverage is likely managed by Optum. Optum and UnitedHealthcare belong to the same parent company, and Optum Behavioral Health, which you may also see listed as United Behavioral Health (UBH), handles the mental health and addiction side of many UnitedHealthcare plans.
Promises Dallas-Fort Worth is in network with UnitedHealthcare, and that contract includes Optum and UBH. Below, you’ll find how that connection works, what an Optum-managed plan may cover, and how to confirm your benefits before starting treatment.
How Optum Fits Into Our UnitedHealthcare Contract
It can be confusing to see two company names attached to one health plan. With many UnitedHealthcare plans, medical benefits run through UnitedHealthcare while behavioral health benefits are administered by Optum. That’s why some cards list a separate phone number for mental health and substance use services.
Because Optum and UBH are named in our UnitedHealthcare in-network agreement, members whose behavioral health benefits are managed by Optum can often use in-network benefits at our Lewisville facility. Optum also manages behavioral health benefits for some employer plans that don’t carry the UnitedHealthcare name. In those cases, network access depends on how that specific plan is set up, so verification is the only reliable way to know.
What an Optum-Managed Plan May Cover
Coverage always depends on your individual plan, medical necessity and prior authorization. With those conditions in mind, an Optum-managed plan may help pay for these levels of care at Promises DFW:
- Medical detox: medically supervised withdrawal management. This matters a great deal for alcohol and benzodiazepines, because withdrawal from those substances can be life-threatening.
- Residential treatment: structured, live-in care for a primary substance use disorder, a primary mental health condition, or both.
- Partial hospitalization program (PHP): intensive, in-person treatment during the day at our Lewisville campus.
- Virtual intensive outpatient program (IOP): online treatment several days a week for adults anywhere in Texas.
Optum typically reviews behavioral health admissions at the start of care and then periodically afterward to confirm that the current level of care is still medically necessary. These check-ins generally take place between clinical staff and Optum’s reviewers, which lets you stay focused on your recovery.
How to Verify Your Optum Benefits
Before you call, find your insurance card and note the member ID, group number and any behavioral health phone number printed on it. Then choose whichever option feels easier:
- Call the behavioral health number on your card. Ask whether Promises Dallas-Fort Worth in Lewisville is in network for your plan, what your deductible and out-of-pocket maximum are, and whether detox, residential, PHP or IOP require prior authorization.
- Ask our admissions team to check for you. Our insurance verification is free and confidential, and we’ll walk you through what your benefits appear to include.
Write down the date of your call, the representative’s name and any reference number. Benefits can change when a new plan year begins, so it’s wise to verify again if your treatment will extend past your plan’s renewal date.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Optum the same as UnitedHealthcare?
They’re related companies under the same parent organization. UnitedHealthcare is the health insurer, and Optum often manages behavioral health benefits for UnitedHealthcare members and some other plans.
My card says UnitedHealthcare, but I was told to call Optum. Is that normal?
Yes. Many UnitedHealthcare plans route mental health and substance use questions to Optum. Our in-network contract includes both, subject to your plan’s terms.
Can an Optum plan cover treatment for co-occurring conditions?
Many plans include benefits for both substance use and mental health care. If you’re dealing with both, ask about dual diagnosis treatment when you verify so your full clinical picture is considered.
Is my employee assistance program the same as my Optum health coverage?
Not usually. An employee assistance program (EAP) generally offers short-term counseling and referrals. Detox, residential care and ongoing treatment are typically billed to your health plan instead.
